Here are some of the best bets for Labor Day viewing.
Robert De Niro features as a corrupt senator, McLaughlin, who is the target of assassination by the reluctant Machete (Trejo). Double crossed and on the run Machete braves the odds with the help of Luz (Michelle Rodriguez), a saucy taco slinger, Padre (Cheech Marin) his “holy” brother, and April (Lindsay Lohan) a socialite. All the while he’s being tracked by Sartana (Jessica Alba), a sexy ICE agent with a special interest in the blade slinger. This one sounds like a winner.
George Clooney’s star power carries this through. An assassin constantly on the move and always alone, Clooney is at his best. Jack (Clooney) retreats to the Italian countryside after a job in Sweden turns out too hot. He holes up in a small medieval town and revels in being away. While there, Jack takes an assignment to construct a weapon for a mysterious contact, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten). In the peaceful mountains of Italy, Jack accepts the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues an affair with a beautiful woman, Clara (Violante Placido). Jack and Clara’s time together evolves into a romance, one seemingly free of danger. But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.
GOING THE DISTANCE
This is the first choice of the date night crowd. Drew Barrymore and on and off again real life love Justin Long in the light romantic comedy “Going the Distance” are together for this light hearted fun. They come together, neither expecting it to last, but when they have been together six weeks; the prospect of ending is not welcome. While there are friends and family who have their views on the match, they just might go the distance.
A vampire spoof, about a down and out band, The Winners, who will do anything for a record deal. When their disgruntled manager tells them that they are getting “long in the tooth,” he doesn’t know that his words are truly prophetic. During a road trip, their humdrum image radically changes when Jennifer, the bass player, disappears one night with a hip vampire. She emerges with a sexually charged charisma that drives the audiences wild. As fame comes to them, they are being hunted by the legendary vampire hunter, Eddie Van Helsing.
THE LAST EXORCISM
Last but not least is the horror flick “The Last Exorcism”, which is heading into its sophomore weekend. There is always an audience for good blood and gore and the movie scores on that level.
