Know More About Pearls – June Birthstone

What’s the difference between a natural pearl and a cultured pearl?

Natural pearls are formed when an irritant makes its way into a pearl-producing animal. In protection; the animal coats the irritant in nacre(NAY-KAR)-a combination of organic substances that also makes up what we call mother-of pearl. Over a period, the layers of nacre build up around the irritant and form the organic gem we all know as pearl.

Cultured pearls are formed in the same way as natural pearls, with just one difference: they begin with man intervening with nature. To produce cultured pearls, man induces the pearl-growing process by placing an irritant-a mother-of-pearl bead into a mollusk. The animal is then placed back into the water and then monitored, cleaned, etc. until the pearl is ready to be harvested.

Mikimoto, a Japanese man, is credited with developing modern pearl culturing techniques. By the early twentieth century, Mikimoto was selling his cultured pearls worldwide. Nearly all pearls sold today are cultured pearls. These are two main types: freshwater and saltwater. South Sea cultured pearls, Tahitian cultured pearls and Akoya cultured pearls are all types of saltwater pearls.

Thanks Deepika for the compliment! We are continuing to improve based on customer popularity and demand, but also traditions. It’s the traditions we inherit that give us a solid foundation and just like jewellery, lasts forever.
