Choosing the Right Gem & Metal for Your Skin Tone

Have you ever wondered which gem looks best against your skin tone? Have you tried an assortment of pendants and earrings just to end up confused? As a dark skinned woman, I never really knew what looked good or flattered my complexion when it came to jewelry. So I did an extensive research and found that there are a few ways to figure out which metals and gems will best suit a skin tone.

Choosing the Right Gem & Metal for Your Skin Tone

To begin with, understand that your skin tone will generally fall into one of these two categories – cool or warm. And the simplest way to recognize it would be to look at the color of the veins located on the inside of your arm or wrist.

Cool Skin Tones: Best identified by bluish colored veins

People with cooler skin tones may notice pinkish or rosy-red undertones when they look into the mirror. Most people fall in this category, including people with dark and tan complexions. If you have determined that you have a cool skin tone, then you’ll look best wearing pieces crafted from platinum and white gold. When it comes to gems, consider pearl, blue sapphire, amethyst, aquamarine, ruby, emerald, opal, tourmaline and tanzanite.

Warm Skin Tones: Best identified by greenish looking veins

People with warmer skin tones will notice yellow or golden-apricot undertones when they look into the mirror. Individuals with dark complexion are usually not warm-skinned. If you fall in this category then jewelry designs crafted in classic yellow gold or rich rose gold will look fabulous on you. Warm-hued gemstones, such as citrine, garnet, morganite, peridot, ruby, or a mix of coffee and white diamonds will be a flattering choice.

Neutral Skin Tones: They have a bit of both the elements of warm and cool skin tones.

Everything will look great on you! People with this type of skin tone can easily pull off yellow and white metals, as well as multi-colored gemstones. Diamonds, especially, are a spectacular choice. Even gems with a sparkling blue hue, such as a sapphire or blue diamond will look great.

At the end of the day, what really matters is that you feel wonderful in whatever you wear regardless of the color of your skin. So keep in mind the above mentioned tips, but don’t be afraid to experiment with a variety of earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings; and find something that makes you feel truly confident.
